Welcome, Class of 2017-18!
It was a memorable kick-off for the experience of a lifetime. ASSIST’s four-day Orientation, designed to help students transition smoothly to American culture, was a huge success.
During this year’s Orientation, held August 15th-19th at Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT, ASSIST welcomed 160 new Scholars from 23 countries. This year we welcomed our first delegation from Cambodia, and for the first time in many years students arrived from Denmark and the Netherlands.
Memorable events like the Germany vs. The World soccer match pitted some of our fiercest athletes against each one another on the field. During the final event of the week, Scholars performed folk dances, songs, and cultural skits for an evening of entertainment called Traditions of Our Cultures—always a favorite among students, staff and attendees. Head over to the @assistscholars Instagram page to check out footage from the performances!
Students enjoyed plenty of opportunities to get to know their fellow Scholars and adapt to their new surroundings during cultural entry and adjustment sessions. Through American sports clinics, tours of Boston’s Freedom Trail, and shopping in Quincy Market, Scholars had numerous opportunities to sample American culture and cuisine before diving into a new school year.
