Welcome to
ASSIST Australia

ASSIST Australia was established to help young Australian students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as scholarship students in the United States as 11th graders. Candidates finishing 10th grade in December 2018 are eligible for the 2019/20 academic year in the U.S.  We work primarily in partnership with the independent schools in Australia. 

Our work in Australia began in the 1988/89 academic year. Our first Australian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 102 Australian students have studied in the States under our auspices.

Welcome to
ASSIST Austria

ASSIST Austria was established to help young Austrian students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders.  There are also some opportunities available to students entering 10th grade.Candidates should note that very few ASSIST member schools offer the IB curriculum; you should assume that you would enroll in a traditional American-style curriculum.

Our formal work in Austria began in the 2006/07 academic year. Our first Austrian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 54 Austrian students have studied in the States under our auspices.  Previously, Austrian students came as ASSIST scholars starting in the class of 1972.

ASSIST became active in Bulgaria to help young Bulgarian students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders.

Our work in Bulgaria began in the 1993/94 academic year. Our first Bulgarian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 138 Bulgarian students have studied in the States under our auspices.  It is through the leadership of our partner, the Bulgarian Reading Association, that this scholarship competition is made possible.

New Financial Support for Bulgarian Scholars

American schools are generous in offering scholarships to ASSIST students. Throughout our time in Bulgaria, ASSIST has identified sponsors to help students and their families pay for the cost of participating in the program. The Ranch Spur Charitable Trust and many other American donors have stepped forward to support deserving Scholars. Application Process for 2018/19 Scholarships

All initial applications for ASSIST scholarships for Bulgarian students are received through our partner, BulRA. Scholarships are also offered to boarding schools in the UK through our colleagues of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC).

Our work in Croatia began in the 1999/00 academic year. Our first Croatian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 72 Croatian students have studied in the States under our auspices.

Czech Republic

ASSIST became active in the Czech Republic to help young Czech students currently in the 10th or 11th grades who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders.

Our work in the Czech Republic began in the 1994/95 academic year. Our first Czech scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 112 Czech students have studied in the States under our auspices.  It is through the generosity of our partner, the Open Society Fund (OSF) Prague, that this scholarship competition is made possible.

ASSIST Denmark has been reestablished to help young Danish students currently in the 9th grade and the first year of gymnasium (10th grade) who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 10th or 11th graders. Students return to Denmark to resume their studies after their American year.

Our work in eastern and central Europe began in Hungary in the 1990/91 academic year with the support of the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation. Our first Hungarian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 152 Hungarian students have studied in the States under our auspices.

Financial Support for Hungarian Scholars

American schools are generous in offering scholarships to ASSIST students. Throughout our time in Hungary, ASSIST has identified sponsors to help students and their families pay for the cost of participating in the program. Hungarian alumni and American donors have joined together to support deserving Scholars.

Our first Lithuanian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 131 Lithuanian students have studied in the States under our auspices.  It is through the generosity of the Kazickas Family Foundation that this competition is made possible.

New Financial Support for Lithuanian Scholars

American schools are generous in offering scholarships to ASSIST students. Throughout our time in Lithuania, ASSIST has identified sponsors to help students and their families pay for the cost of participating in the program. In addition to the Kazickas Family, Lithuanian alumni and American donors support deserving Scholars. Now the U.S. Embassy is also stepping forward to help fund students who would otherwise not be able to accept their scholarships.

ASSIST Poland

 ASSIST Poland was established to help young Polish students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders. Candidates should note that very few ASSIST member schools offer the IB curriculum; you should assume that you would enroll in a traditional American-style curriculum.

Our work in Poland began in the 2010/11 academic year. Our first Polish Scholar distinguished herself in her American independent school, and this encouraged us to establish a permanent office in Poland. Ultimately, 22 Polish students have studied in the States under our auspices.

It is through the leadership of our partner, T & T School of English, that this scholarship competition is made possible. We also work in concert with HMC Projects.

Candidates should note that very few ASSIST member schools offer the IB curriculum; you should assume that you would enroll in a traditional American-style curriculum.

ASSIST Turkey

ASSIST became active in Turkey to help young Turkish students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders. Our work in Turkey began in 2012/13, and ultimately 20 Turkish students have studied in the States under our auspices. We wish to expand our presence in Turkey in the coming years.

ASSIST Vietnam

ASSIST became active in Vietnam to help young Vietnamese students currently in the 10th or 11th grades who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders.

Our work in Vietnam began in the 2005/06 academic year. Our first Vietnamese scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 47 Vietnamese students have studied in the States under our auspices.

Our work in Vietnam is undertaken in partnership with The Taft School and The Berkshire School.

All initial applications for ASSIST scholarships for Vietnamese students are received through our partner, American Education Group-Vietnam. Scholarships are also offered by Taft and Berkshire Schools.
